Ingredients

2 oz Amaro Montenegro
1 oz Lunazul Blanco Tequila
0.5 oz lime juice

Directions

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled coupe or Nick and Nora glass.

Notes

We had people over for games on Cinco de Mayo, and my husband found this recipe on the web. I don’t often drink tequila but this one is great for how simple it is! Montenegro has a perfect balance of sweet and bitter in this drink. The guests enjoyed it too!

Ingredients

2 large eggs
4 tbsp superfine or baker's sugar
2.5 oz Osborne Amontillado sherry
2 oz Lunazul añejo tequila
6 oz whole milk
4 oz heavy cream
grated nutmeg

Directions

Beat eggs in blender for one minute on medium speed. Slowly add sugar and blend for one additional minute. Add and blend remaining ingredients. Chill thoroughly to allow flavors to combine and serve in chilled glasses, grating nutmeg on top immediately before serving.

Notes

So, the sherry and tequila just make this. It’s different and interesting, with the same great texture and balance of Morgenthaler’s base recipe. A real bright spot this season.

Hole in the Cup

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz Patron Silver Tequila
1/4 oz St. George Absinthe
1 oz Trader Joe’s Cold Pressed Pineapple Juice
3/4 oz Demerara Syrup
1/2 oz lime juice
2 cucumber slices
cucumber slice garnish

Directions

Muddle cucumber slices, lime juice, syrup, and pineapple juice together. Add the absinthe and tequila, shake, with ice, and double-strain into a large chilled martini or coupe glass, Garnish with a slice of cucumber on the rim.

Notes

WOW. First off, the cucumber is magical in this drink. Absolutely so refreshing with the pineapple. I don’t gravitate toward tequila drinks but this worked great. The absinthe is quite anise-forward, which I love. The cucumber garnish also adds a perfect aroma. This is why I like home bartending. Most drinks I blog here are quite good. Then you get something like this—totally surprising and unlike anything else. This is a dangerous one! I loved watching my husband’s reaction after he tried it…YES!

Ice-berg

Credit: Brad Thomas Parsons, Amaro, citing Garret Richard

Ingredients

1 oz Gran Centenario Añejo Tequila
20 ml bottle Underberg herbal liqueur
1 oz orgeat
3/4 oz lemon juice
1 cup ice

Directions

Blend all ingredients and garnish with the empty Underberg bottle upside-down.

Notes

This is like a Christmas margarita. Clove-forward. Also note to self, have orgeat at the ready before cocktail hour, since I was out and had to make it from scratch and woke up my 7-year-old running the blender for 45 seconds making almond milk!

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz reposado tequila
1/2 oz. agave syrup
1/2 oz. lime juice
1 tsp Becherovka
1 1/2 oz horchata

Directions

Shake and strain over ice.

Notes

Confession—I used the tequila I had, which was Patron Silver, not reposado. I also used 2 oz horchata. It was refreshing, but the tequila was challenging. I also didn’t get much of the Becherovka. I think I’d want to try this with more Becherovka and less tequila, as I tend to like lighter drinks.
